THESSALONIKI, GREECE

Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, after the capital Athens, and the administrative center of the region of Central Macedonia. The population together with the suburbs is 1.2 million inhabitants. Thessaloniki is home to the largest university in the Balkans, named after Aristotle, a large seaport, which ranks it second in importance in the country after Piraeus. Thessaloniki was founded by the Macedonian king Kassander in 315 BC, who named it after his wife Thessalonica, sister of Alexander the Great. One of the most famous sights of the city is the White Tower. which became a symbol of the city. Other famous ones are the church "St. Dimitar", the rotunda "St. George", Archaeological and Byzantine Museum.
