SKULL TOWER

NIS, SERBIA

The Skull Tower was built in 1809 by order of Sultan Mahmoud II. The tower is made of the skulls of more than 900 Serbs that were killed during the First Serbian Uprising, together with their commander, Stephen Siegelich. The tower was built at the busiest and most important route through the city - the Tsarigradsko Way - in order to be seen by every traveler passing through it as an example of what happens to the rebels, who oppose sultan's power. Until the liberation of Nis in 1878, the skull walls stood outdoors and later they become part of the donated chapel.
