DAILY PROGRAM

DAY 1

Arrival in Sofia. Transfer to the hotel and accommodation. Guided walking tour of the city centrе, including visit to Alexander Nevski Cathedral – one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in Europe, as well as one of Sofia’s symbols and a primary tourist attraction: St. Sophia Church, built by the Byzantine Еmperor Justinian in the 6th century, the National Theatre, the former Royal Palace, etc. Visit to St. George Rotunda (4th c.) - the oldest building in Sofia and a fine monument of Roman architecture. Free time in the city centre. Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Sofia.

DAY 2

Breakfast. Visit to Boyana Church and the National History Museum. National Museum of History is one of the largest history museums on the Balkans with 650.000 exhibits and huge archaeological and historical archive. Boyana Church is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated in the Boyana Suburb, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The frescoes in the church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings.

 

Return to the centre. Free time. Optional evening tour “Sofia by night” and dinner at a traditional restaurant with folklore music and dances. Overnight in Sofia.

DAY 3

Breakfast. Drive to the town of Kyustendil - the old Roman Pautalia, translated as “city of the spring”. The hot mineral springs are Kyustendil’s biggest asset. A total of 40 springs are the horn of plenty in this country. Sightseeing tour of the town concentrating on the Roman heritage - Hisarlaka Fortress, the baths of Pautalia, local history museum, etc. Drive back to Sofia. Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Sofia.

DAY 4

Breakfast and departure for Plovdiv, ancient Trimontium - European capital of culture 2019.

 

Departure for Plovdiv. Walking tour in the Old Town, including the Roman Ancient Theatre, which was built in the 1st century AD and is nowadays considered to be the largest surviving Roman construction in Bulgaria, St. Constantine and Helena Church, Roman Stadium. Visit to the Ethnographic Museum.

 

Free time in main walking street, Kapana creative district and city garden. Return to Sofia.

 

Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Plovdiv.

DAY 5

Breakfast. Drive to Hisarya - the ancient Roman city of Auguste or Diocletianopolis. Sightseeing tour, including the Roman Fortress with the complex of the ancient thermae. The archaeological reserve Hisar Fortress is an excellent example of early fortification art, best preserved monument of this kind in Bulgaria. Nine basilicas have been discovered here. Departure for Stara Zagora. Accommodation and optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Stara Zagora.

DAY 6

Breakfast. Sightseeing tour of Stara Zagora - Roman Forum, Southern Gates of ancient Augusta Trayana, the History Museum. Departure for Kardzhali. On the way – visit to Perperikon - the most important megalithic structure in Bulgaria with incessant life for the last 4000 years. Under the Roman Empire a whole settlement existed here – remains of a palace and fortifications can be seen on top of the rocks. Accommodation at hotel in Kardzhali and optional dinner. Overnight in Kardzhali.

DAY 7

Breakfast. Visit to the History Museum in Kardzhali exhibiting some of the most interesting discoveries from antiquity in the Eastern Rhodope Region. Departure for Sofia. Accommodation and optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Sofia.

DAY 8

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport and departure.
